Harvesting Gratitude: Harvest Moon Gratitude Ritual

harvest moon, gratitude, full moon, esbat, Mabon, Autumn Equinox, Fall Equinox, spell, ritual, balance, candle magic, magic, magick, sabbat, hedge witch, pagan, wicca, wiccan, green witch, kitchen witch

This year, Mabon and the Harvest Moon fall just a couple of days apart, making it the perfect time to express gratitude for the year's blessings. The end of the harvest is quickly approaching and winter will be upon us before we know it. This is a time to take stock of what we have, prepare for the coming winter season, and be thankful for the blessings we have. This ritual is designed to help you express that gratitude and thank the Earth, local spirits, deities, and other otherworldly forces in your life for their continued support and love. Remember, being grateful is essential to attracting abundance. By expressing gratitude, we open the door for continued blessings to enter our lives, as like attracts like all.

What You'll Need

  • Altar adornments associated with the Harvest Moon, gratitude, and your deities, spirits, etc
  • Candle (pink or another color you associate with gratitude, the harvest, and/or abundance)
  • Jar
  • Paper strips
  • Writing utensil
  • Acorns and/or Citrine chips
  • Wine/Beer/Cider/Juice or other seasonal offering

What to Do

During the Harvest Moon or Mabon, begin by finding a quiet place to work where you will not be disturbed. This ritual is best performed outside under the light of the Moon but can be done inside near a window if conditions do not allow you to venture outside. Cleanse and consecrate your space using your preferred method before setting up your altar in preparation for the ritual. You will want to choose items that you associate with the season, Harvest Moon, gratitude, and your deities, spiritual guides, local spirits, Earth, ancestors, or any other otherworldy forces you work with regularly in your practice. This can be colorful dried leaves and flowers, acorns, citrine, runes such as Gebo or Fehu, candles, pictures, statues, antlers, incense, etc. Be sure to leave space for you to safely work your spell as this ritual does include a candle.

harvest moon, gratitude, full moon, esbat, Mabon, Autumn Equinox, Fall Equinox, spell, ritual, balance, candle magic, magic, magick, sabbat, hedge witch, pagan, wicca, wiccan, green witch, kitchen witch

When your altar is complete, place your spell ingredients and offering in the center. If you wish to cast a circle and call quarters, now is the time to do it using your preferred method. When ready, light the candle and begin invoking the otherworldly forces you work with regularly in your practice one by one by saying, "[Insert name and descriptors here] I invite you to this rite to give thanks and pay tribute to all those who have helped me. I ask that you be present to receive my gratitude on this night. May the moon and stars bear witness to this sacred act." If you do not feel them come immediately, repeat this invocation, adding more descriptors as you go. Remember, no spirit, deity, ancestor, or other entity is required to show up when called, so if they choose not to join you, do not be deterred. You can still honor them and give your thanks.

Stand or sit before your altar and take time to reflect on the blessings and abundance in your life using the candle's flame to enter into a mild trance if needed. Write down each thing you are grateful for on each strip of paper. Be specific and heartfelt in this thanks. It could be a person, a moment, an accomplishment, or anything else that fills you with gratitude, hope, and happiness. Once complete, read each blessing aloud saying, "I am thankful for [insert blessing.] Thank you [insert entity name] for this blessing." before folding the paper toward you and placing it in the jar.

When all the blessings have been placed in the jar, add your acorns and/or citrine and seal the jar. Hold the gratitude jar gently in your hands and offer a closing prayer or expression of thanks, acknowledging the blessings you have recorded and sealed within. This should come from your heart, so what you say is entirely up to you. I encourage you to speak in the moment until you feel you have sufficiently expressed your thanks.

Close the ritual by offering the entities you work with wine, beer, cider, juice, or another seasonal offering they may prefer, such as milk, corn, tobacco, whiskey, or incense, by saying "With this [insert offering] I express my undying gratitude for the gifts you have bestowed upon me. May you accept this offering of love and thanks and continue to bless me in the future." Take a few moments to pour your gratitude into the offering in whatever way you see fit before releasing the ritual and snuffing out the candle. Place the gratitude jar somewhere you will see it every day.

For the next several weeks until the next full moon, choose one strip from the gratitude jar to read. Let the feelings of gratitude wash over you and continue to give thanks to those who have assisted you on your journey. Continue to make regular offerings to express your gratitude. If possible, make a donation to or volunteer at a local charity or give back to your community in some other way, such as picking up trash, cleaning up local a river or stream, or handing out blessing bags to the unhoused.

harvest moon, gratitude, full moon, esbat, Mabon, Autumn Equinox, Fall Equinox, spell, ritual, balance, candle magic, magic, magick, sabbat, hedge witch, pagan, wicca, wiccan, green witch, kitchen witch

Under the next full moon, you may release the jar's contents by burning the strips of paper and giving thanks once again or continue to add to the jar's blessing to watch your abundance continue to grow. I encourage you to continue adding to your jar each month for the next year to cultivate a daily practice of gratitude and appreciation for the blessings that surround you. Over time, this jar will fill with notes of thanks, serving as a tangible reminder of the abundance in your life as it continues to bring more blessings to you.

Why You Did It

Understanding the whys of a spell is just as important as performing it. It helps you understand the process so you can modify the spell or ritual to suit your needs and helps guide you to write your own. It's my intention that by providing these explanations, you can build a better understanding of how spells are written and executed so you can modify and build your own spells (the goal of my Spellcrafting Series).

harvest moon, gratitude, full moon, esbat, Mabon, Autumn Equinox, Fall Equinox, spell, ritual, balance, candle magic, magic, magick, sabbat, hedge witch, pagan, wicca, wiccan, green witch, kitchen witch

First, this spell is conducted during the Harvest Moon or Autumn Equinox, both of which are deeply associated with gratitude, appreciation, and the giving of thanks, particularly for the bounty of the harvest. This association was further perpetuated by your choice of altar decorations, which work sympathetically to increase the ritual's potency and attract the entities you work with. The full moon is also associated with celebrating the fruits of your labors, being a time to appreciate what you have accomplished and honor what you have created. As such, this is the perfect time to create a gratitude jar that you can add to all year as the moon's beams further infuse the spell with its own potent energies.

Next, a candle was lit to light the way for the entities you work with so they could find you calling to them in the dark. It also helps you focus on your goal, as the flame can be used to calm and clear your mind so you may focus on that which you are grateful for. The entities you work with were invoked using their name and descriptors so that they could witness your expression of gratitude and receive the offerings of thanks you wished to gift them with. Thanking those who have helped you is the foundation of a healthy relationship, and strengthens the bond you both share. It also ensures the entity will continue to work with you in the future, as there is little worse than working with a thankless witch. Continued offerings and expressions of gratitude also ensure future blessings, as like attracts like. When we express our gratitude, the Universe hears it and continues to send blessings our way. This is further expressed by writing and saying our blessings out loud and continuing to express gratitude over the next month or year.

harvest moon, gratitude, full moon, esbat, Mabon, Autumn Equinox, Fall Equinox, spell, ritual, balance, candle magic, magic, magick, sabbat, hedge witch, pagan, wicca, wiccan, green witch, kitchen witch

Added to the jar were citrine and/or acorns, which are both associated with abundance and luck. These were added to the jar to enhance your blessings and bring more to you over time. I think we all wish to continue to grow our blessings.

Finally, the spell was sealed with further thanks and preferably charity work. Giving back to the community that you are a part of, whether it be caring for the Earth or her creatures, is a great way to pay tribute to entities that have helped you and show those entities you are willing to share your blessings with others. Giving thanks takes many forms and requires constant work, but it is well worth it in the end.

Wish to break this spell? When you feel the ritual is complete, either at the end of a moon cycle or at the end of the year, you can release the contents of the jar by burning them. This released those blessings back into the Universe so that they may return to you again in the future. You can also choose to bury the contents close to your home, including planting the acorn to watch your blessings grow.

Remember to record this ritual on your ritual/spell worksheet or in your Book of Shadows for reference later.

***

No matter what you decide to be thankful for or how to express those thanks, gratitude is the foundation of good witchcraft. I hope you have a blessed Harvest Moon and thank your future be full of continued luck, fortune, health, and happiness.

Ripe for Success: A Strawberry Moon Ritual for Abundance and Prosperity

abundance, prosperity, wealth, luck, success, candle magic, candle magick, magick, strawberry moon, full moon, esbat, ritual, spell, witchcraft, witch, witchy, wicca, wiccan, pagan, neopagan, magick, magic, occult, hedgewitch, hedge witch, green witch, kitchen witch
Disclosure: Some of the links below are affiliate links, meaning, at no additional cost to you, I will earn a commission if you click through and make a purchase.

June's full moon is commonly known as the Strawberry Moon due to the abundance of strawberries being harvested during this time. Here in Georgia, strawberry season is just about over, our warmer weather pushing the peak of the season ahead into late April and early May, but the themes are still the same. This is a time of abundance after a long rest and the perfect time for manifesting prosperity and abundance in your own life. This ritual should be performed the three days around the Strawberry Moon, or during the peak of the full moon. This ritual also pairs well with my Strawberry Moon Worksheet.

What You'll Need

  • 1 green or white candle with a candle holder (or try House of Intuition's Money Magic Candle)
  • Toothpick or another tool to etch
  • 1 teaspoon dried strawberry leaves or fresh strawberry 'caps'
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil leaves
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2-3 drops of honey
  • Match or lighter
  • 3 strawberries (9 total for 3 nights)

What to Do

During the first night of the Strawberry Moon, begin by cleansing and consecrating your space using your preferred method. If you wish, cast a circle and invite any spirits or deities associated with prosperity, money, and abundance.

After your space has been cleansed and consecrated, etch the Fehu rune into your green or white candle using a toothpick or other etching tool. Combine the dried herbs on a plate or flat surface and hold your hand over the top of them and say, "Strawberry for luck, basil for money, and cinnamon for good fortune. Combined I ask you to bring prosperity and abundance to my life so I shall never want." Dress the candle with 2-3 drops of honey then roll it in the herb mixture, making sure to lightly coat the entire surface. Do not overdress your candle as this can create a fire hazard. Place the candle in your candle holder in the center of your workspace.

Pick up the first strawberry and hold it in your hand. Close your eyes and think about your past abundances and prosperities. What are you thankful for? What have you previously had enough of?  Allow these memories to wash over you and fill you with joy and gratitude. Feel that energy move into the strawberry. Place the strawberry to the left of the candle.

Pick up the second strawberry and hold it in your hand. Close your eyes and think about your present abundances and prosperities. What is currently in your life that you are thankful for? What do you currently have enough of? Allow these memories to wash over you and fill you with joy and gratitude. Feel the energy move into the strawberry and place it in front of the candle closest to you.

Finally, pick up the last strawberry and hold it in your hand. Close your eyes and think about your future abundances and prosperities. What do you want more of in your life? What will life be like with more of those things in your life? How will your life change? Allow these visions to wash over you and fill you with gratitude and contentment. Feel that energy move into the strawberry. When ready, place the strawberry to the right of the candle.

Light the candle and say, "My past, present, and future are full of abundance and prosperity. I am thankful for all that I have and shall never want in the future. I draw wealth, success, and good fortune to me always."

As the candle burns, continue visualizing your past, present, and future abundance and prosperity. When ready, consume the first strawberry (past/left). Feel its energy coarse through you, strengthening and nourishing your body, mind, and spirit. Repeat this process with the other two strawberries, allowing the candle to burn as you do so.

When you have finished consuming the strawberries, snuff out the candle and complete your ritual by releasing any energy, deities, or spirits you called upon. Repeat this spell for the next two nights for three nights total, allowing the candle to burn down completely on the third night. Bury any eco-friendly spell remains near your front door for good luck.

Why You Did It

Understanding the why's of a spell are just as important as performing it. It helps you understand the process so you can modify the spell or ritual to suit your needs and helps guide you to write your own. It's my intention that by providing these explanations, you can build a better understanding of how spells are written and executed so you can modify and build your own spells (the goal of my Spellcrafting Series).

First, this spell is conducted during the Strawberry Moon, June's full moon which is associated with wealth, prosperity, abundance, fertility, and fullness of life. The full moon in general is also associated with manifesting, making this the perfect time to manifest abundance and prosperity, especially that related to money and food. The full moon generally lasts 3 nights, and three is associated with good fortune as well as action. By performing this spell during the full moon for three nights, you reinforce your intention, although you can also perform this spell just once or during the waxing moon which is also associated with growth and manifestation.

Next, a green candle was chosen to represent money, wealth, and abundance. White, on the other hand, is associated with new beginnings and high vibrations. The Fehu rune was carved into the candle to empower it with wealth and abundance. Fehu means "wealth" particularly 'mobile' wealth, a reference to cattle or sheep which brought their owners a comfortable living. It helps ensure the prosperity you experience is long-lasting and stable. The candle was then rolled into a mixture of strawberry leaves, basil, and cinnamon, all herbs associated with luck, prosperity, good fortune, money, abundance, and wealth. Honey was chosen to bind the herbs to the candle to sweeten the deal and bring wealth. Honey was often referred to as liquid gold, its color and richness of flavor being associated with abundance and wealth.

Three strawberries were used to represent your past, present, and future abundances. Part of manifesting is recognizing that what you want already exists in your life. By showing gratitude, you recognize how much you already have and are able to attract more of it toward you. There is a strong correlation between  gratitude and manifestation. The strawberries were filled with these energies and then eaten to imbibe you with their strength and intention so that you may take the actions needed to bring more abundance into your life.

Finally, any eco-friendly spell remains, which were likely the remaining herbs, were buried near your front door to bring good luck and fortune. The spell remains buried close to your front door are said to draw things toward you, in this case, your spell's intention.

Wish to break this spell? If you are getting more than what you initially bargained for, thank the Universe for all it has given you and let it know you are satisfied. If you have attracted unwanted attention from this spell, you may need to conduct a spell to turn away prying eyes or make you invisible. If you have attracted the unwanted attention of a lover, you may need to banish them or do a chord-cutting ritual. Breaking this spell is completely dependent on what you have too much of.

Remember to record this ritual on your ritual/spell worksheet or in your Book of Shadows for reference later.

Remember, the Strawberry Moon is a time of prosperity, abundance, fertility, and love. No matter what you decide to do this full moon, I hope it's full of magic!

Embracing Renewal with the Worm Moon: A Ritual for Personal Growth

worm moon, full moon, esbat, ritual, spell, witchcraft, witch, witchy, wicca, wiccan, pagan, neopagan, magick, magic, occult, hedgewitch, hedge witch, green witch, kitchen witch

I know I missed February's full moon, but I do not plan to miss March's and what a moon this is expected to be. March's full moon goes by many names, including Worm Moon, Crow Moon, Lenten Moon, Chaste Moon, and Sugar Moon, each of which is so named after the signs and symbols of the coming of Spring. The March's full moon is all about transformation, renewal, growth, and fertility, which this ritual capitalizes on. This is a time of change and therefore the perfect opportunity to plant seeds for future success, the benefits of which you shall reap in the coming months. This ritual also pairs well with my Worm Moon worksheet.

What You'll Need

  • 1 white or green candle with a candle holder
  • Match or lighter
  • A small bowl of water, preferably full/waxing moon water
  • Piece of paper
  • Writing utensil
  • Sunflower seed or bean
  • Small pot with soil or somewhere outside to plant the seed

What to Do

During the Worm Moon, begin by cleansing and consecrating your space using your preferred method. If you wish, cast a circle and invite any spirits or deities.

When ready, light the white candle and place it in front of you. Sit quietly for a few minutes, focusing your attention on the candle's flame. Breathe deeply, feeling your mind and body relax.

Take the bowl of water and swirl it clockwise with your finger while saying, "Healing waters imbued by the moon, wash away negativity and old patterns. Bring strength and wisdom, renewal and rebirth to my life." Anoint your forehead and heart while saying, "May I be renewed and transformed, by the power of the Worm Moon, and may my intentions be set in motion. I release what no longer serves me to make room for new blessings."

On the piece of paper, write down your intention for the upcoming months. What skills, attitudes, habits, behaviors, knowledge, or personal qualities do you wish to develop? How do you want to grow personally? Fold the paper three times toward you. Place the seed on top of the folded paper and place your hand on top. Feel the seed warm under your hand, filling with your intention. Visualize yourself achieving your goals, and growing to become the person you wish to be.

When your visualization is complete, light the paper on fire, visualizing the flame igniting your intention and sending it out into the universe. Plant the seed in your desired location and sprinkle the ashes of your petition over top. Gently cover and water with some of the moon water while saying, "May my transformation blossom with this seed. As this seed grows, so shall I. So I will it, so it shall be."

Lightly water the seed daily repeating the above affirmation, or creating a new one. Talk to the seedling once it begins to sprout, letting it know of your successes. As you nurture the new plant, so too shall you nurture your own personal growth and success.

This spell begins with a light meditation designed to ground and center you in the moment. This is a time of great change and you have likely been feeling stressed or out of sorts. Grounding and centering through light meditation with a candle flame helps combat this feeling and focus on the task at hand. A white or green candle is used in this spell to represent either a clean slate/new beginning (white) or growth and success (green), as well as transformation as Fire is the element of change.

Next, the bowl of water, which symbolizes the element Water, was used to wash away the past, leaving room for the future. Water also helps nourish and replenish, aiding in your personal growth. You anointed your head and heart with the water to heal the past, nourish your future goals, and help you focus on the future. This same water was later used to nourish the seed, which represents new beginnings, life, transformation, growth, and success. Sunflowers and beans are both associated with growth, abundance, success, and prosperity. Full or waxing moon water is best for this spell as these phases are associated with growth and success.

Finally, the petition was burned in the flame to release your intention into the universe and the ashes were fed to the seed to help feed the spell. As mentioned earlier, Fire is associated with transformation and is capable of burning away obstacles, barriers, and other hindrances to your growth. Fire is also life-giving, as the ashes left behind help regenerate the soil.

Much like all magic, this spell requires constant work. You must continue to water the seedling, just as you have to actively work toward your personal growth goals. The seedling is to act as a reminder of your intentions.

Wish to break this spell? Thank the plant for its service and transplant it outside where it can grow freely.

Remember to record this ritual on your ritual/spell worksheet or in your Book of Shadows for reference later.

Recentering with the Wolf Moon: A Transformative Full Moon Ritual for the New Year

wolf moon, full moon, cold moon, moon ritual, esbat, ritual, witchcraft, witch, witchy, wicca, wiccan, occult, pagan, hedge witch, hedgewitch, magick, magic, grimoire

With the new year barely underway, many of us are looking for ways to start fresh and set ourselves up for success. This often takes the form of setting goals and resolutions. However, this isn't the only way to ensure a fruitful year. This year, 2023, we are starting off the first week with a full moon! Full moons are a time of heightened energy, and they can be a powerful catalyst for transformation and personal growth. The first full moon of the year is known as the Wolf Moon, a name that originates from the howling of wolves often heard around this time of year. It's associated with centering, balance, new beginnings, reflection, and taking stock of what you have. This full moon ritual is designed to help you tap into the energy of the Wolf Moon and use it to recenter and embrace the new year with a renewed sense of purpose and clarity. This ritual also pairs well with my Wolf Moon worksheet.

What You'll Need

  • 1 teaspoon peppermint
  • 1 teaspoon lavender
  • 1 white chime candle
  • 2-3 drops olive oil or anointing oil
  • Small piece of paper, large enough to write your intention or sigil
  • Writing utensil
  • 4 quartz crystals
  • 4 crystals of choice associated with grounding, centering, and balance such as citrine, tiger's eye, smoky quartz, selenite, brown agate, brown jasper, or other brown and black crystals.
  • Match or lighter
  • Heat-proof dish/plate

What to Do

During the Wolf Moon, begin by cleansing and consecrating your space using your preferred method. If you wish, cast a circle and invite any spirits or deities.

When ready, mix the peppermint and lavender together and awaken them using your preferred method, such as holding them in your hand, whispering to them, or blowing your intention into them (be sure not to blow them away). Place 2-3 drops of oil on your candle and rub until the entire candle is coated in a fine oily layer. Roll the candle in your herbal mixture until well coated.

On the piece of paper write your intention to center, ground, find balance, or inner peace. I chose to write "recenter" as my intention. Fold the paper in half twice toward you and hold it to your heart while you say, "I release the past and embrace the present. I walk into the future with an open heart and mind. Come what may, I am calm, collected, balanced, and focused." Place the folded paper in the center of your heat-safe dish and place the candle on top.

Next, charge your crystals using your preferred charging method. I prefer to blow my intention into my crystals as this not only charges them but also cleanses them of past energies. When ready begin constructing your crystal grid by placing the four pieces of quartz in each cardinal direction. In between each quartz crystal, place your chosen four crystals.

wolf moon, full moon, cold moon, moon ritual, esbat, ritual, witchcraft, witch, witchy, wicca, wiccan, occult, pagan, hedge witch, hedgewitch, magick, magic, grimoire

Light the candle and say, "Wolf Moon, shining bright, bring strength to my spell on this night. Bring me peace and balance in this new year so I may proceed with strength and cheer." Sit comfortably in front of your candle and crystal grid and close your eyes. In your mind's eye, feel all of your energy that is loose in the world returning to you and filling you up. See your body's center being to glow, getting brighter and brighter as your energy returns to you. Hold onto this image for as long as you can, until you feel like you are going to burst then slowly release the energy throughout your body, visualizing your center dimming as the rest of you begins to glow. If you need to, wiggle your fingers and toes or stretch to help distribute your energy back through your body.

When ready open your eyes and focus on the flame, entering a light meditative state to calm your body and mind until the candle burns out completely. If you are short on time, you can snuff out the candle and repeat the ritual the following night.

Once the flame has been extinguished, close your ritual, being sure to thank any deities or spirits you invited. Bury the paper remnants near your front door or in your front yard. You can dismantle the crystal grid or keep it up until the dark moon to ensure your spell's success.

This spell begins with awakening the peppermint and lavender. Unless you are using freshly picked leaves, you will find that the energy of dried herbs is often quiet or stagnant. By waking up the herbs, you reawaken their energy, set the intention for the spell, and call on the spirit of the plant to aid you in your magical endeavors. This is often something I forget to do, but you'll find that waking up the herbs prior to using them strengthens and empowers the spell in a way that sleeping herbs do not.

Peppermint and lavender were chosen to dress the candle due to their unique magical properties. Peppermint is associated with purification and is a potent magical amplifier. The strong aroma is peppermint helps remove obstacles and clear the way for success. Lavender, on the other hand, is associated with cleansing and protection. It helps remove what is stagnant and unwanted while protecting you and your spell from potential interference. These herbs dressed a white candle which represents the full moon as well as new beginnings, clarity, and purification.

wolf moon, full moon, cold moon, moon ritual, esbat, ritual, witchcraft, witch, witchy, wicca, wiccan, occult, pagan, hedge witch, hedgewitch, magick, magic, grimoire

Next, your intention was written on a piece of paper and the paper was folded toward you before placing it under the dressed candle. By folding toward you, you are drawing your intention to you and by placing it under the candle, you are giving it the strength needed to manifest your intention. A crystal grid was constructed around the candle and intention paper to amply and support the spell. Quartz is a potent amplifier, balancer, and grounding crystal, while brown and black stones such as tiger's eye and smoky quartz are associated with balance, grounding, and centering. I also chose to use citrine for balance and happiness, and selenite for clarity and peace.

The visualization/meditation was used to completely center your energy and bring any loose energy back to you before redistributing it through your body. This will leave you feeling renewed, energized, and balanced, ready to take on whatever the rest of the year may hold.

Finally, this spell is best performed during the Wolf Moon. The Wolf Moon is associated with centering, reevaluating, taking stock, and embracing community, therefore, making it the perfect time to call back your energy and recenter.

Wish to break this spell? Unfortunately, this is not a spell that can be "broken" in any traditional way. If you feel overwhelmed by the amount of energy you have called back to yourself, simply release it back into the Universe and deconstruct your crystal grid.

Remember to record this ritual on your ritual/spell worksheet or in your Book of Shadows for reference later.

***

Remember, the Wolf Moon is a time of reflection, not manifestation. As winter bears down, we take stock of our stores and plan for the future. You don't need to set lofty goals at this time, but instead take the time to slow down and be grateful. I hope everyone has a magical full moon.

Wolf Moon Social Justice Spell Jar

spell jar, full moon, social justice, wolf moon, spell, ritual, witchcraft, hedgecraft, hedgewitch, hedge witch, traditional witchcraft, witchcraft, occult, pagan, neopagan, wicca, wiccan, cunningfolk,

This year, I want to focus on regularly practicing witchcraft, including honoring the Full and New Moons. For a while there, I was, but the pandemic hit, and, well, everything fell by the wayside. I know I am not alone in that feeling and probably not the only one whose practice has suffered as a result. While we are still in a pandemic, I feel compelled to take back control of my life and my magical practice, and this starts with spell work.

Tonight is the first Full Moon of 2022 and, in the States, MLK Day. Known as the Wolf Moon, this is a time for protection magic, action, and social justice, which is exactly what today's spell jar is all about. However, this spell jar alone is not enough. At the end of the spell, I include resources and actions you can take to empower this spell and ensure its success. All spells require mundane work, this one more so than others. Creating this spell jar without taking real-world action is the equivalent of posting a black photo on your social media page and then going about your normal content routine the next day. It's performative activism and has no place in this very real fight.

What You'll Need

  • Jar with lid or cork
  • Red Jasper
  • Garnet or Hematite
  • Rose Quartz
  • Peppermint
  • Chamomile
  • Jasmine
  • Rose
  • Cinnamon
  • 2x2 inch square of paper
  • Pen
  • Orange Candle
  • Justice Tarot Card

spell jar, full moon, social justice, wolf moon, spell, ritual, witchcraft, hedgecraft, hedgewitch, hedge witch, traditional witchcraft, witchcraft, occult, pagan, neopagan, wicca, wiccan, cunningfolk,

What to Do

Begin by cleansing and consecrating your space using your preferred method. Before starting on the creation of your jar, meditate on what social justice means to you. Conjure up images and feelings relating to social justice issues. Think about systemic racism, trans- and homophobia, the patriarchy, inequalities, xenophobia, etc. Remember the countless innocent lives snuffed out too soon by a biased 'justice' system. Remember the laws and regulations being pushed through our government to limit the human rights and voting rights of specific groups. Call up all the emotions you can possibly muster. If this means you are crying at the end of the meditation then so be it. If you are angry, all the better. You should be fired up, ready to pour all of that into this spell.

Now that you are ready, begin awakening your ingredients and adding them to your spell jar. Begin with the red jasper. Say, say, "Red jasper, bringer of justice, courage, and inner strength. Awaken my inner warrior. Bring balance where there is none. Give me the strength and courage to speak out against injustice and fight for what is right."

Next awaken the garnet or hematite by saying, "Garnet [or Hemitite], ground me in this moment. Help me remember what I am fighting for. Help me make just decisions and protect me and those I fight for from the evil."

Now awaken the rose quartz by saying, "Rose quartz, crystal of unconditional love and empathy. Help me love thy neighbor as myself. Help me love unconditionally and listen empathetically. Light the way to a world full of radical self-love."

Next peppermint: "Peppermint, bringer of protection, abundance, and clarity. Help me see the situation clearly. Be a call to action, not only tonight but all nights. Ignite the fires of my soul and aid me in my task."

Next chamomile: "Chamomile, bringer of justice and introspection. Help me confront my own biases so I may change and encourage change in others. Remind me to be gentle and caring."

Next jasmine: "Jasmine, flower of healing and communication. Help heal the wounds caused by an inequitable system. Open the doors for communication and help the oppressors hear our message."

Next rose: "Rose, flower of love and compassion. Encourage empathy and help me realize I do not need to understand everything; that by letting go of this need I can better show compassion and empathy. Bring love and compassion to a world fraught with hatred and divisiveness."

Finally, cinnamon: "Cinnamon, bringer of warmth and success, lend this spell your aid. Bring forth abundance and speedy results. Warm the hearts of those shrouded in ice so that they may see the error in their ways. Uncross an oppressive system and break down barriers. Ensure the success of this spell."

On the piece of paper create a SATOR square on one side and draw the Tiwaz rune on the other. To create a SATOR square write SATOR, AREPO, TENET, OPERA, ROTAS as seen below:

Roll up the paper and place it in the bottle. Seal the jar and place the orange candle on top. Light it and allow the wax to melt down over the sides, sealing the jar completely. As it melts, recite one of the following: Psalm 35, Psalm 58, Psalm 137, Psalm 109, or the following incantation invoking Hekate.

"Hekate, Guardian of Children and the Marginalized, Keeper of the Keys and Crossroads, Guardian of the Gate, Tocherbearer, hear my plea. Bring justice now, I ask of thee. Right the wrongs that have been done and avenge the oppressed O Mighty One. Bring swift justice to a broken system and punish those who continue oppression. Bear your torch and wield your knife to remove barriers on this night. Hasten, Dark One, hear my pleas, this is what I ask of thee."

If you chose a Psalm, before closing the prayer with Amen, tell God, the story of oppression and social inequality and ask for justice to be served. Continue chanting until the candle goes out. Place the jar on top of the Justice card and allow the jar to charge in the moonlight overnight. Follow up the spell by getting involved in social justice. Below are several resources and suggestions to help you fight the good fight.

*Follow BIPOC content creators such as Alexis Williams (@lelegenevieve), Toby Nabors (@racialequityinsights), Brando (@anish_no_bae), Clare Brown (@clarabellecwb and @claarabelletoks), and Levert Blout (@levertthebassman)

*Write to your representatives about issues related to social justice. PB-Resources.com has a wonderful list of actions you can take this MLK day and includes scripts and links to email or call your representatives.

*Learn. Read books and content about systems of oppression such as Savage Inequalities, White Fragility, The New Jim Crow, The Color of Law, Killing the Black Body, Policing the Black Man, Why I'm No Longer Talking to White People About Race, American Prison, Democracy in Black, and Radical Self Love.

*Call out your friends, family, and strangers when they say or do something that continues to upload the standard of oppression.

This spell requires constant action. Recharge the jar each Full Moon by recounting what you have done to fight social injustice. This jar must be fed at least once a month. I suggest keeping this jar for at least one year before dismantling. At the end of the year, break the jar's seal and bury the remains at a crossroads, thanking Hekate or God for their help. If you wish, recreate the jar the following January and continue your social justice journey. You'll likely find yourself changed for the better by the end.

Why You Did It

Understanding the why's of a spell are just as important as performing it. It helps you understand the process so you can modify the spell or ritual to suit your needs and helps guide you to write your own. It's my intention that by providing these explanations, you can build a better understanding of how spells are written and executed so you can modify and build your own spells (the goal of my Spellcraft Series).

For this spell/ritual, the spell is performed during the Full Wolf Moon which is associated with protection, action, and social justice. Furthermore, it was done on or around MLK Day, further empowering the spell with social justice energies. The Full Moon is also associated with manifestation, which we are trying to do with this spell jar.

spell jar, full moon, social justice, wolf moon, spell, ritual, witchcraft, hedgecraft, hedgewitch, hedge witch, traditional witchcraft, witchcraft, occult, pagan, neopagan, wicca, wiccan, cunningfolk,

The crystals and herbs we used in this spell are each associated with an issue related to social justice. Red jasper is associated with balance, stamina, courage, inner strength, and right wrongs, making it perfect for social justice work. Rose quartz promotes love and therefore empathy, promoting a more understanding, empathic, and loving world, especially in regards to yourself and your view of others.

Wish to break this spell? Unfortunately, this is not a spell to be undone. If you really wish for the negative energies to come back, invite them back. Garnet and Hematite are both associated with grounding, decision-making, and protection. They lend protection to both the caster of the spell and those suffering from an inequitable system while opening your heart and mind to the task of dismantling the oppressive system. Peppermint promotes action and brings mental clarity, while chamomile and jasmine promote justice, introspection, healing, and communication. Rose, like rose quartz, promotes love and empathy while cinnamon ensures success, heats up the spell, and brings protection.

The SATOR Square is a four-way palindrome that is associated with protection and diminishing the power of oppressive forces. It has historically been used to create protection charms and amulets and is used in the same way in this spell jar, to protect marginalized groups. The Tiwaz rune symbolizes justice, balance, and sacrifice. This spell requires constant 'sacrifice' in order to continue feeding it. By sacrifice, I mean donating to charities, taking time to read and learn, and otherwise doing the work necessary to dismantle inequities in our society.

If you chose to recite a Psalm, the ones listed ask God to bring swift justice, making them perfect for this sort of ritual. If you chose to use the Hekate invocation, Hekate is associated with marginalized groups and bringing justice. She is an impartial judge and swift in her punishments. She is also a barrier breaker and perfect for dismantling systems of oppression.

Finally, the spell jar is sealed with an orange candle and charged by the Justice card and Full Moon. I think the Justice card and Full Moon are obvious here, but the orange candle may not be. Orange is the color of justice, attraction, and removing blockages.

spell jar, full moon, social justice, wolf moon, spell, ritual, witchcraft, hedgecraft, hedgewitch, hedge witch, traditional witchcraft, witchcraft, occult, pagan, neopagan, wicca, wiccan, cunningfolk,

If you wish to break the spell, simply dismantle the jar and dispose of the remains. However, I encourage you to feed this jar for at least one full year. At the end of the year, break the jar's seal and bury the remains at a crossroads, thanking Hekate or God for their help. If you wish, recreate the jar the following January and continue your social justice journey. You'll likely find yourself changed for the better by the end. I cannot stress this enough.

Remember to record this ritual on your ritual/spell worksheet or in your Book of Shadows for reference later.

***

I highly encourage all of my readers to create such a spell jar this Full Moon. I know the pandemic has caused many of us to take a step back from the things that matter most and this is a great way to start taking small, manageable steps in the right direction. I focused almost entirely on BIPOC social justice, but this jar can and should be used to fight ALL oppression, including homophobia, transphobia, fatphobia, xenophobia, and the patriarchy. Each month I am picking a different issue to focus on using Bettie's Pages's #ChallengeYourShelf as a starting place. I hope you will join me this year as we work together to fight for real justice.

December Cold Moon Worksheet

full moon, esbat, ritual, witchcraft, moon magic

December's Cold Moon is justly named for the weather this time of year, at least in the Northern Hemisphere. Also known as the Hoar Frost Moon, Long Night Moon, and Big Winter Moon, December's Full Moon is a time of reflection, introspection, and self-discovery. Because it is the last Full Moon of the year, this is the perfect time to reevaluate your goals and set new ones for the coming year. This is also a time to share your blessings with others and give to those in need. Use this Full Moon to plan for the coming year, reflect on what you would like to change, and set new goals.

This month's Full Moon worksheet contains the usuals of my past Full Moon worksheets, including a to release and cleanse section, a box for your intuition, and an oracle or tarot spread. Unlike past worksheets, however, this one can be used every December, as it is based on the correspondences of the moon itself and not other astrological events. The tarot spread for this month features 5 cards to help you set goals for the future.

November Beaver Moon Worksheet

full moon, esbat, ritual, witchcraft, moon magic

November's Beaver Moon is named after the beaver's hunkering down in their lodges this time of year. This Full Moon is also referred to as the Frost Moon or Freezing Moon, for the frost the coats the ground as Winter approached, and the Deer Rutting Moon in reference to the rut. Depending on when the Moon falls, this Full Moon is often associated with the Witch's New Year, making it the perfect time to work new beginning spells, shed bad habitats just as the deer shed their antlers, cleanse your home, and focus on self-care.

This month's Full Moon worksheet contains the usuals of my past Full Moon worksheets, including a to release and cleanse section, a box for your intuition, and an oracle spread. I decided to switch to oracle cards from tarot because there is some talk in the witch community of tarot being a closed practice, and out of an abundance of caution I felt switching was best. Unlike past worksheets, however, this one can be used every November, as it is based on the correspondences of the moon itself and not other astrological events. The tarot spread for this month features 4 cards to help figure out what you should shed this month, much like the deer who will shed their antlers.

October Hunter's Moon Worksheet

full moon, esbat, ritual, witchcraft, moon magic

The Hunter's Moon, also known as the Falling Leaves Moon, Sanguine Moon, and Drying Grass Moon, occurs during October. The name Hunter's Moon comes from the fact that hunting season peaks during the Fall months, especially during October. This is the time of year for hunting and gathering to stockpile provisions for the upcoming Winter months. The falling leaves and drying grass comes from the fact that the trees are losing their leaves and the grasses are dying back, leaving dry stalks in its place. The nights lengthen, giving us time to hunker down and reflect upon the months prior, making this the perfect time to address bad habits, start fresh, and work with your ancestors.

This month's Full Moon worksheet contains the usuals of my past Full Moon worksheets, including a to release and cleanse section, a box for your intuition, and an oracle spread. I decided to switch to oracle cards due to some concerns about tarot being closed, but upon further review, research suggests it is not a closed practice. However, you can use oracle cards in the same manner as tarot cards so pick which ever you like. Unlike past worksheets, however, this one can be used every October, as it is based on the correspondences of the moon itself and not other astrological events. The tarot spread for this month features 3 cards to help you get in touch with your ancestors.

Harvest Full Moon Worksheet

harvest moon, full moon, esbat, ritual, witchcraft, moon magic

The Harvest Full Moon is the Full Moon that falls closest to the Fall Equinox or Mabon. This year, that Moon falls on October 1st, but other times it falls within September. Because it can fall in either month, I made this worksheet separate from the months, allowing it to be used whenever it is needed. The Harvest Moon is usually the moon that marks the last of the crops being brought in for harvest. While some crops may still be harvested after the Harvest Moon, they are on the decline. This is a time for taking stock of what you already have and replenishing your stores, whether this be physically, mentally, emotionally, or spiritually. Shift your focus to hearth and home, spending time to prepare for the Winter months by removing clutter, cleaning, and stockpiling.

This month's Full Moon worksheet contains the usuals of my past Full Moon worksheets, including a to release and cleanse section, a box for your intuition, and a tarot spread. Unlike past worksheets, however, this one can be used every Harvest Moon, as it is based on the correspondences of the moon itself and not other astrological events. The tarot spread for this month features 6 cards focusing on removing clutter from your life.

September Corn Moon Worksheet

full moon, esbat, ritual, witchcraft, moon magic

September's Full Moon is known as the Corn Moon, Barley Moon, Wine Moon, and sometimes the Harvest Moon if it falls close enough to the Fall Equinox. Corn, barley, and grapes are the main plants being harvested this time of year, hence the name. Mabon, being the second harvest festival and a time of giving thanks, gives September or October the name Harvest Moon. As the wheel continues to turn, the days are growing shorter and the nights longer. The Corn Moon marks a time of abundance, thanksgiving, and most of all preparation. Spend this Full Moon giving thanks for the abundance in your life, giving to others, calling abundance to you, and planning ahead for the Winter months. Stockpile your witch's cabinet and meditate on what to keep and what to leave behind as we transition to Winter.

This month's Full Moon worksheet contains the usuals of my past Full Moon worksheets, including a to release and cleanse section, a box for your intuition, and a tarot spread. Unlike past worksheets, however, this one can be used every September, as it is based on the correspondences of the moon itself and not other astrological events. The tarot spread for this month features 4 cards focusing on what you should harvest at this time and where you should go in the future.

August Sturgeon Moon Worksheet

full moon, esbat, ritual, witchcraft, moon magic

August's Full Moon is known as Sturgeon Moon, Green Corn Moon, Barley Moon, Fruit Moon, or Grain Moon. Sturgeon Moon comes from the number of sturgeon present in the Great Lakes at this time, which was a staple food source of the Algonquin tribes in the Midwest. The other names, however, originate from the crops being harvested at this time. Corn, barley, fruits, and grain harvests begin at this time, providing food for the upcoming winter months. As such, this is a time to start preparing for the future, harvesting what you can now in preparation for what is to come. Check on your spiritual and physical health, getting rid of what you no longer need and cultivating what will bring you happiness and prosperity in the future.

This month's Full Moon worksheet contains the usuals of my past Full Moon worksheets, including a to release and cleanse section, a box for your intuition, and a tarot spread. Unlike past worksheets, however, this one can be used every August, as it is based on the correspondences of the moon itself and not other astrological events. The tarot spread for this month features 5 cards focusing on what you should harvest at this time and where you should go in the future.
