Threshold Protection Spell

Note: This post contains potentially problematic practices or language, cultural appropriation, or misinformation. I have been working diligently to decolonize my practice, for which you can learn more about in my article Decolonizing Witchcraft: Racism, Whitewashing, and Cultural Appropriation in Witchcraft and How to Decolonize Your Practice. I believe in documenting my journey in witchcraft and that my readers can learn from my mistakes, so the posts will remain as a learning opportunity.

Last night was the full moon and while banishing magic is best conducted during the waning moon, something told me that I should go ahead and clear out the negativity in our home, redo our threshold protection spell, and strengthen the ward currently protecting us. Sometimes it is better to listen to the universe than force the issue later on.

I spent the entire day cleaning the house and preparing for the moon to rise. Before you put up a ward or a threshold protection spell, you need to take down your previous ward and clear your home of all negativity. Cleaning is the best way to do this in my opinion. Some people take a more "magical" approach, using spells and charms, but cleaning, cleaning gets rid of the mundane and magical "dirt" while freeing your mind of clutter as well. You want to be sure to clean EVERYTHING. Yesterday I washed baseboards, doors, fans, the dishwasher, under all the furniture, even some of the outside windows. Cleaning stirs up stagnate energy, so cleaning behind and under things helps push out the negativity. Closets, where I didn't clean, I stirred up the stagnate energy by clapping, but you can use a chime or drum as well. Clapping is easiest considering I had enough to haul around into each room.

Start at the top of the house and work your way down. This means rooms as well that way you don't have to sweep and vacuum twice. I work clockwise because that is most comfortable for me, but most banishing magical suggests you walk counterclockwise. I can never bring myself to work in the opposite direction. Why? Because I feel counterclockwise pushes not only the negative away, but prevents the positive from entering as well. I find that moving forward and inviting more positive in works best, but everyone is different. Do what feels right to you. I also open the windows in the room I am cleaning as an exit for negativity. No windows? That's fine; sweep the negativity into the next room until there is a window or door for it to exit.

Once your house is clean and the energy stirred up, you are ready to put up your threshold protection spell and ward. I put up the protection spell as soon as I was done cleaning. You can use this spell on every door and window in your home if you want, but I feel confident my ward will prevent the bulk of negativity from entering. Furthermore, everyone must enter through our front door, so anything the ward fails to prevent will be prevented at the threshold. My favorite threshold protection spell is from The Way of the Hedge Witch by Arin Murphy-Hiscock. Its simple and quick, just what you need after cleaning all day.

Supplies:
     1 cup water
     1/2 cup vinegar
     1 tablespoon salt
     1 tablespoon lemon juice
     bowl or bucket
     washing cloth
     sage smudge
     matches or lighter
olive oil mixed with a pinch of salt
     3 cloves of garlic

  1. Begin by combining the water, vinegar, salt, and lemon juice in your bowl or bucket. Using the washing cloth, completely clean your threshold. Wipe down the front and back of the door and both sides of the door frame. Try to get it as clean as possible.
  2. Light the smudge stick and move it around the door frame. Waft the smoke so it touches both the inside and outside of the door frame. Lay the smudge in a heatproof dish and allow it to smoulder during the ritual.
  3. Dip your fingers in the oil and salt mixture and trace the outside of the door frame. Make sure there are no broken spots; you want a complete seal. As you trace the frame say:
"No evil or illness may cross this threshold. I hereby bar it from entering. My home is protected."
  4. Dip your fingers in the oil again and touch the upper left corner of the door frame. Trace through the air to the bottom right. Dip your fingers again and trace from the upper right to the lower left. Finally, dip and trace from the upper middle to lower middle all while repeating:
"No evil or illness may cross this threshold. I hereby bar it from entering. My home is protected."
  5. This symbol is a hexefus which is a combination of the runes Isa (|) and Gebo (X). When written together they "freeze" the state of your home and possessions, protecting them from physical and spiritual intrusion.
  6. Finally take the three cloves of garlic and bury them as close to the threshold as you can. I buried mine in a line. One of the left, one in the middle, and one on the right. As you do this repeat the same chant.
"No evil or illness may cross this threshold. I hereby bar it from entering. My home is protected."
***

I have used this threshold protection spell at every house I have lived in. It works, but you need to keep an eye on it. Depending on how much negativity is trying to enter determines how long the spell will work. I suggest strengthening it every couple of months, but you may need to redo it every month. My husband is a funeral director and when he has had a particularly heavy load of cases dealing with murder, suicide, and unexpected/tragic loss, I find our threshold weakens faster. Its amazing what you can bring home with you. For extra protection, sprinkle a line of salt across the outside of the door frame. This will further prevent negativity and keep away most insects.

I hope this has been helpful. I will post the ritual I use to create my ward later this week. Until then, how do you protect your home?

Magical and Medicinal Uses of Nettle

Welcome! This is my very first post for the 2014 Pagan Blog Project. Since the blog is new, I haven't been able to participate in past posts. However, I hope you find this post and free BOS page on the herb Nettle useful. Thank you for visiting, and I hope you will be back soon!

Folk Names: Ortiga Ancha, Stinging Nettle
Gender: Masculine
Planet: Mars
Element: Fire
Powers: Exorcism, Healing, Lust, Protection
Magical Uses and History: Nettle has long been used in protection magic. Sprinkling nettle around your house will keep evil out and send it back. It can be carried in a sachet or poppet to remove curses, worn as an amulet to keep negativity away, or even held in the hand to ward off ghosts.

For healing purposes, place freshly cut nettle in the room of one who is ill to aid in recovery. You can also pluck nettle up from its roots and recite the name of the sick person and his/her parents to aid in recovery. According to Welsh folklore, if you place freshly cut nettle under the pillow of the sick and it stays green the person will live; if it turns yellow they will die.

In Ireland, nettles are believed to mark the places where Elves live.

Nettle can be used in a number of spells including:
     Protection Spells
     Exorcisms
     Dispelling Evil
     Body Cleansing and Purification
     Healing Spells
     Love Spells (uncommon)

Medicinal Uses: Nettle is one of the most widely applicable herbs and can be used as an astringent, diuretic, and tonic. It strengthens and supports the entire body. Many use it to treat eczema, especially nervous eczema. As an astringent, it can be used to treat nosebleeds and relieves symptoms of hemorrhaging. Figwort or Burdock aid in the treatment of eczema.

Preparation and Dosage: Leaves should be collected when the flowers are in bloom. Internally- To make an infusion, pour a cup of boiling water over 1-3 teaspoons of dried leaf and allow to steep for 10-15 minutes. It can be drunk up to three times a day. Externally- 1-4 milliliters of a tincture may be taken up to three times a day.

Monthly Magical Moons

Each full moon of the month represents something different and empowers different forms of magic. If you find your magical workings struggling to come to fruition, try using the monthly full moons to your advantage. Below are the historical moon names, and the magic you should focus on during them.

January: Milk, Nursing, or Wolf Moon- This is the month to focus on family activities, including doctor’s appointments and goal setting.

February: Fasting, Storm, or Weaning Moon- This is the month to wean things from your life. Change your eating habits and get rid of unwanted subscriptions and memberships.

March: Chaste or Seed Moon- Excellent time to begin new things, including projects, jobs, and activities. Try learning something new or picking out the plants you will grow in your garden.

April: Hare or Mating Moon- Focus on others this month, especially your significant other. Make sure you are satisfied and that you are both in harmony with each other. This is also the month to begin planting, after the last frost of course.

May: Dyad or Journey Moon- This is an excellent time to travel to both new and old places. Spend the month running major errands and taking day/weekend trips.

June: Mead or Mother’s Moon- Take care of issues regarding the women in your life this month, or if you are a woman, address any issues you may be having related to your womanhood.

July: Father’s or Wort Moon- Take care of issues regarding the men in your life this month, or if you are a man, address any issues you may be having related to your manhood.

August: Barley or Nesting Moon- This month make sure you are ready for the winter. Store foods, mend blankets, and discard old winter clothing and replace them with new garments.

September: Harvest or Wine Moon-Finish up projects or if the project is large, try to have it finished by November.

October: Blood, Culling, or Sorting Moon- As the names suggest, this is the time to remove clutter from your life. Clean out your house and donate all unwanted items.

November: Death or Snow Moon- Remove “dead energy” from your house. Repair broken items around the house, compost dead flowers and plants, and throw out anything you can’t fix or don’t want to fix. If there is still clutter in your life, finish getting rid of it this month.

December: Birth or Dark Moon- Think about new projects this month and begin scheduling them for the upcoming year. Mark off any special dates and enjoy the holiday season.

Magical and Medicinal Uses of Lavender

Magical and Medicinal uses of Lavender. Includes FREE BOS page!
Folk Names: Elf Leaf, Nard, Nardus, Spike
Gender: Masculine
Planet: Mercury
Element: Air
Powers: Chastity, Happiness, Longevity, Love, Peace, Protection, Purification, Sleep
Magical Uses and History: Lavender has a long and rich history, especially in regards to love spells. The scent of lavender is said to attract love and men. Several centuries ago prostitutes wore lavender water or essential oil to advertise and magically attract customers. Wearing lavender or endowing your clothing with it will attract love, but also protect against cruel treatment at the hands of a spouse. It can also be rubbed on paper that will be used to write love notes or love spells. Despite its strong  association with love, when combined with rosemary it is said to preserve one’s chastity.

The flowers are also burned to induce sleep or scattered around the house to bring peace. In fact, lavender is so powerful it is able to reverse depression when gazed upon.

Lavender can be used in a number of spells including:
         Cleansing Spells
         Attraction Spells
         Love Spells
         Healing and Longevity Spells
         Dream Magic
         Divination

Medicinal Uses:  Lavender is the most effective herb to treat headaches, especially those caused by stress. It is also effective in treating depression and can be used to promote sleep. Lavender oil can be used externally to help ease rheumatism. To treat depression you can combine lavender with Rosemary, Kola nut, or Skullcap. For headaches, combine with Lady's Slipper of Valerian.

Preparation and Dosage: Internally- pour a cup of boiling water onto 1 teaspoon of dried herb and allow to infuse for 10 minutes. Can be drunk up to three times a day. Externally- oil can be inhaled, rubbed on the skin, or used in baths. Do not ingest.

Primal Language

Primal Language

One of the keys to effective hedgecraft, or any magical workings, is primal language. Through my studies I have found many authors often skim over this subject without addressing what exactly it is, the importance of it, and how to use it. My purpose here is to remedy any questions you may have on the subject.

What is Primal Language and why is it important?

First of all, primal language is a clearly expressed formulation of spoken or written words describing a single desire that translates into energy. It is the only language the universe speaks, making it the foundation of all spell work. If you can't speak to the universe, you can't perform magic.

How do you use Primal Language?

To use primal language you must be in the right mindset and be precise. A cluttered mind and unchecked words send mixed signals to the universe which can work against you. You must be focused and your desire concise. Use as few words as possible, but be descriptive. Furthermore, using negative words can bring things you don't want while using superfluous words can block your desires altogether.

So first clear your mind and visualize your desire. Feel the energy it fills you with. Next, write out your desire clearly. It may take a little while to clearly express it, but the more precise you are, the more likely you are to succeed. I find starting with a noun and adding the specific adjectives works best. Don't use words such as hope, maybe, might, perhaps, possibly, don't, never, and not. All this does is confuse your energy translation. For example, say I want to get a new couch, more specifically I want the couch I saw at Ikea a couple months ago. I am not just going to say "I want that awesome green couch from Ikea." Instead, I would say "I want a sandbacka green Stockholm sofa or better." In doing this, I have said what color it is, what model it is, and told the universe if it finds something better for me, I am open to it too. Don't ask the universe a question, such as "May I please have _____?" That isn't concise nor is it a desire.

Once you are sure your desire is concise enough, cast your spell, work your magic, or just go out and look up at the sky and tell the universe what you want. Don't forget to say thank you.

Manifestation of your desire, however, can be complicated by you or a loved one if either/or are not truly open to it. My husband loves our current couch, so asking the universe for a new one will probably not work as he is telling the universe he wants to keep it. This confuses the universe and complicates your primal language. In order for your desire to manifest, you have to make sure all parties involved want the same thing. Furthermore, you need to believe that what you are asking for will happen. Be positive and remember, sometimes these things take time. As I mentioned, your desire must be translated into energy and sometimes it takes more time than you'd like.

I hope this has cleared up any questions you may have regarding primal language. I suggest practicing primal language in your everyday life. Our thoughts and feelings manifest energy as well and can confuse your verbal or written primal language. It's a difficult task that can take days, weeks, months, or even years to perfect. However, no one is perfect, so don't beat yourself up if you mess up every once in a while. Trust me, I stumble all the time, especially when I am stressed or upset about something happening in my life.

Still have questions? Feel free to comment below or let me know if you have a different understanding of primal language.
