Upright vs Reversed Runes

Upright vs Reversed Runes

This marks the very end of our Rune Magic Series. Today I would like to briefly discuss upright and reversed runes. As I mentioned in my initial posts on the Futhark Runic Alphabet, runes can be upright or reversed. Reversed runes hold different meanings, usually the opposite of the upright position. However, not all runes can be reversed, so please be sure to check the list.

How can you tell if a rune is upright or reversed? Easy!

Upright vs Reversed Runes

That is really all there is to it.

So far I have cast my runes once regarding whether or not we were going to be financially stable in the next two years. This is very important to my husband and me as we wish to start a family before I am 30. The runes gave a promising answer. I am hopeful.

Thank you for tuning into the series. I hope you enjoyed it and if you have any further questions or have a topic you would like me to cover, please feel free to comment below or contact me via email!

  4. How can you tell if the Eihwaz rune is upright or reversed ? It seems the rune is perfectly symetrical, thus the upright and reversed being indistinguable. But in the runes meaning you said the eihwaz can be reversed

    1. So yeah, Eihwaz is tricky because it is symmetrical. Some do not consider it to have a reversal, but others do, which is why I have included a reversed or merkstave position for this rune in my original post. For some, reversal would mean the run is wonky or on its side, rather than upright. For others there can be a line on the bottom denoting the upright versus reverse status, similar to what people do with 6 and 9. Its completely up to you how you decide to read the rune and its perfectly acceptable not to read it in reverse.

  5. Does the meaning of the runes change if flipped horizontally? (horizontal flip <|>)

    1. If the image is a mirrored version of the original rune upright then its technically reversed. However, you can't mirror the runes along the x-axis without it being face down. Does that make sense? It can flip along the y-axis (reversed) or be on its side. Use the picture in this post to help guide you on reversals. I hope that answers your question.
